Blog Assignment 7

Blog Assignment 7
The essay that I select is "the Publication of Your Personal Profile"(page 33). The author of this essay is Megan Ramirez.
Author's claim:"When users of social networking websites such as Facebook or MySpace put personal information in their profiles, whether intentional or unintentional, they are allowing their private lives to be published which, in turn, give others the right to scrutinize them."
Reasons that support the author's claim:
1. With an increasing number of Facebook and Myspace users, people could visit the other user's the personal without restriction. As you put your personal information at your website, everyone could see it through the internet. For example, if you put a picture of illegal underage drinking, your actions could be seen by both of your parents and the police.
2. The restricted profile is not safe, actually. The strangers could visit your restricted profiles through their friends.
3. The users of Facebook and MySpace do not realize that they should be responsible for the information that they put it on their website.
4.  The pictures and the information of the Facebook and MySpace users are subject to scrutiny no matter they know the truth or not.
The counterargument in this essay: there are so many users of Facebook and Myspace ignore the unsafe things about their personal information. They still enjoy putting and sharing their personal information on the internet.
The evidence that the writer use to support her claim: There are so many evidences. But the author strengthens the evidence of "potential employers will judge potential employees by seeing their profiles" and "In March 2008 at the University of Delaware, eight resident assistants were forced to resign due to posted pictures of themselves drinking on their facebook".
My reading feeling: In my opinion, this essay is really persuasive. Because the author gives us so many examples and database of bad outcome. It is easy for me to get involved in bad consequence if I do not realize the Facebook will show all of my information to all of the users of the internet. I should be careful to use my personal profile because the author offers me so many persuasive reasons.

The example of a quotation in the "A Way With Words, or Away With Words: Effect of Texting and IMing on Language" (by Timothy Barrano)

On the fourth paragraph ( page 27)

"Statistically, they found that 'the use of short forms, abbreviations, and emotional language is infinitesimally small, less than 3% of the data'(Tagliamonate and Denis 24)."

The example of a paraphrase in the "A Way With Words, or Away With Words: Effect of Texting and IMing on Language" (by Timothy Barrano)

On the fourth paragraph ( page 28)

"Individuals pick and choose from all the available ... ... Sociolinguistic resources in their speech community.(by Timothy Barrano)

The reasons why the writer choose to present their research material in this way is to make the topic and the exact figures highlights what the authors would like to express about the central idea, but also a better description of the essence of the problem. The fourth paragraph talked about the presence of some major flaws is supported by the findings of researchers Sali Tagliamonte. So all of these quotation and paraphrase are the extracts of Tagliamonte's Book. The original sentence can be more precisely to the question. All of these research are the supports and evidence of the point of the author's view. The information that derived through the investigation is scientific and accurately to support the author's point of view.

Religion, nationality, gender, experience and so on, these are all the important factors affect writers to write a essay or a book. Because of different factors, different authors have different understanding toward the same historical event, so the articles we read could be totally different.

There is a perfect example to explain my opinion. During this period, China's Tibetan independence are very severe trouble. Overwhelming the world's media to publicize this matter and real-time tracking the latest developments in Tibet. Some media reports pointed out that China contain the Tibet independence, and strongly criticized the practice of China government. They support for Tibet. There are many foreigners who have read the media reports have joined to the support group. However, the truth is that only a handful of terrorists want Tibetan independence, while the majority of the Tibetan people wish to maintain the current political status. In addition, these terrorists did not take reasonable actions, but rather to took some extreme measures, such as destructing houses, beating people and so on. The Chinese government dose not allow them to make a political stand, but they have taken the extreme approach that has affected the social security and the state's reputation. These facts are the foreign media do not know, even some public media has known the truth, they still keep their standing point, because of their respective positions to make the different judgments.

The example that I have mentioned above I do not know is correct, after all, I am also a Chinese and I also have my position. But I try to ensure an objective and fair look at the matter. I think no matter who they are, can not guarantee to maintain an objective in their essay. If they can do that, writers can be replaced by a typewriter. This is because the true feelings of the writers make the article more readable, is not it?

Part1

Answer: According to my experience, I could totally understand why Liu's need to be with other Chinese. His need to be with other Chinese is just a common reaction. When you enter a unique environment where has a different and strange culture compared with the one you have get used to, it is easy for people to get confusing. Facing so many problems, such as language misunderstanding and custom differences, people prefer to find a more familiar environment. Therefore, Liu want to get along with Chinese for releasing the problems.

No, i have not the similar experience with Liu. Though I also come from a another country, I love to get along with new American friends and learn their culture. So I would like to spend my time with American rather than Chinese.

The people who need to be with other people from my country are trying to protect themselves. I do not think this is the best chose for international students to protect themselves. As we all know, the aim we come here is not only for get a degree of UD, but also learn the skills of communication and learn American culture. If you just connect with the people who come from the same country with you ,you will never get new experience and learn the culture. Although it is really difficult to get familiar with new environment, the difficulties could make us grow up rapidly. In my opinion, American are so nice, so do not afraid to chat with them or ask them for help. I promise if you try it, you will love to make friends with American.

Blog assignment 3 Cultural differences in nonverbal communication

Blog assignment 3

Cultural differences in nonverbal communication

Every culture has a series of hand signals and facial expressions uniquely. American use more gestures, eye contact and body language when they express their thoughts. Their talks are enriched by facial expression. On the contrary, Chinese do not use so much nonverbal communications when they communicate with the others. They prefer to keep their hands and heads in original position instead of waving their hands or nodding.

I was startled, when I first time saw there were two American guys do friendly punch. I was afraid they would fight. However, to my surprise, they just wanted to show their friendship was so strong as before. In China, if you touch someone's body, it is easy for the guy who be touched get angry. Another good example is keep fingers crossed. On the orientation day, a girl showed this to me. I was so confusing about that! What is the meaning of that gesture? I did not use it in the past when I was in China. Luckily, I have totally understand it which shows a best wishs.

Certainly, we also have similarities in nonverbal communication between China and America. Here are the examples. The "Thumb up" indicate you are satisfied to something or someone. There is no misunderstanding on the "thumb up" in both China and America.

Although there are so many different nonverbal communication between China and America, the differences encourage me to learn more knowledge about America culture!

Assignment 2 The First Four Minutes

Option3

Yes, I have ever formed a first impression of someone that eventually proved to be completely wrong. According to my experience, when it comes to a special occasions during the first four minutes after I meet someone I will become abnormal. The typical example is when there is a serious situation I will show silence and quite. However, my personality is outgoing obviously. In this case, it is easy for people get confused with my personality and I leave them an incorrect first impression. Therefore, the key of why someone formed an impression of me that was completely wrong is I did not act friendly and self-confidence during that period to convey a good impression of myself. So if I want to improve the situation, I should set up my confidence and act friendly enough to show the “real me”.

Here is an example to support my point above. A few days ago, a Chinese student met me in the front of my dorm door. She asked me about my connection ways and expressed she would like to make friends with me. She tried her best to be friendly, so I believe her “first impression”. On the contrary, after I spent several days with her, I realize she is not friendly instead of she just want me to help her with her problems. I was cheated by the “first impression”.
